WS 33 William Smith 1743 - 1815

It is impossible to devise a simple easy-to-follow system for presenting the details of a large family tree.

As part of my own records I keep a “working sheet” for family groups. Each working sheet shows the parents (birth, baptism, marriage, death and burial) but gives fuller details of their children lives.

The information I am entering here is divided into those family groups, hence each entry title starts “WS”. The numbering system is illogical because it has expanded since 1984 as my information has expanded and it will make no sense to anyone but me. However, if the text says “See WS 23” then that is where more information will be found. This may not be immediately. I may have not entered WS 23 here yet. Not all individuals have a working sheet. Information may well be repeated at various points in order to aid clarity. Not all the information I have is entered as not all is collated as yet - this is a work in progress.

All mistakes of fact, transcription, interpretation and supposition are my own. I aim for total accuracy but am human. Corrections with source references very welcome as only then will the truth be found.

William Smith

Parents I cannot be certain of the parents of William but suggest they may be William and Elizabeth Smith nee Drury. This is because when William, junior, died he left a Will in which he gave a useful clue in naming his son Samuel as a resident of Blackwell, showing the Smith family had connections in that hamlet of Tredington. It is because of this that I am willing to suggest that William was the son of William Smith who died on 31st July 1784, aged 73, and who was buried in Weston Subedge churchyard. His memorial inscription says, “late of this Parish, formerly of Blackwell.”

William senior also left a Will, in which he names a son William.

If this is correctly the father of William Smith (1743 - 1815) his mother was Elizabeth nee Drury, her descent was -

Henry Drury, of Weston Subedge, born c1640, married Mary, who was buried 1 January 1717 at Weston Subedge. In his Will Henry described himself as "yeoman". He was buried 5 May 1709 at Weston Subedge, and his Will was proved at Gloucester 17 May 1709.
Henry had five sons and three daughters, of whom John Drury was the sixth child and third son.
John Drury, of Weston Subedge, baptised 25 February 1674 at Weston Subedge, married 1710 at Shipton-under-Wychwood, Elizabeth Perry. Elizabeth was born c1680, and died in 1754.
John died in 1742, and in his Will describes himself as “yeoman.” His Will was proved at Gloucester 9 November 1743.

John and Elizabeth are buried together in Weston Subedge and their gravestone reads-

Signed 17th April 1813

Witness Geo. Cotterell Elizth. Cotterell Robt. Cotterell

Proved London 26th July 1816 by John Smith and David Smith

So William appears to have been a man of some wealth and standing, quite happy to describe himself not as “husbandman”, “yeoman” or even “farmer”, but as a “Gentleman”. He owned land in his own right and leased more. He does not name all his children in his Will. Daughters may well have had their portion on marriage, but neither William nor Thomas are mentioned. This could mean they too had had their portion previously, or it might suggest they were deceased by 1813, but I am assuming they were not.

Notes

Bigland records that on the Gallery over the West-end of Weston Subedge church it says, “This Church was repaired and beautified in the Year of our Lord 1795. William Smith and James Sansom, Ch. Wardens.”

William Smith

If William was born close to his baptism date in January 1776, it could be him baptising children and then buried in Willersey, aged 63 in 1838, BUT there are millions of Smiths in Broadway, and it could be this is not even the right couple.
